Etymology

Inherited from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (otur-, to sit), from Proto-Turkic *oltur- (to sit). Cognate with Azerbaijani oturmaq, Bashkir ултырыу (ultırıw), Kazakh отыру (otyru), Kyrgyz отуруу (oturuu), Turkmen oturmak, Uyghur ئولتۇرماق (olturmaq), Uzbek oʻtirmoq and Yakut олор (olor).

  1. (intransitive) to sit, to be in a resting position in which the upper body is upright and supported by the buttocks
    Synonyms: جلوس ایتمك (culus etmek), نشست ایتمك (nişest etmek)
  2. (intransitive) to live, dwell, reside, lodge, to settle or have a residence permanently or for a considerable time
    Synonym: اقامت ایتمك (ikâmet etmek)
  3. (intransitive, nautical) to strand, run aground, beach, to be immobilized by water too shallow to allow it to float
