[edit]Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of امام (“imam”) + Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (“slave”)), literally “slave of the Imam”; compare Azerbaijani İmamqulu, Chagatai امامقلی, Turkish İmamkulu.
