Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ȫs- (to blow); cognate with Azerbaijani əsmək, Chuvash авӑс (avăs), Karakhanid اَسْماكْ (esmēk), Khalaj həsmək, Turkmen öwüsmek and Uzbek esmoq.
