Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Ancient Greek κνίδιον (knídion), from Κνίδος (Knídos). First attested in the Ptolemaic period and the most widely attested amphora name in Late Antiquity in Greek and also popular in Coptic (ⲕⲛⲓⲕⲓϫⲓ (knikiči), ⲕⲛⲓⲕⲓⲇⲓ (knikidi), ⲕⲟⲩⲛⲇⲟⲩ (koundou), as an equivalent of ⲗⲁⲕⲟⲟⲧⲉ (lakoote)), but uncommon in Arabic.
