Interjection

أُفٍّ • (ʔuffin)

1. denotes repugnance or annoyance; oof, ugh, faugh

   أُفٍّ لَكَ وَلِمَا تَقُولُ.

   ʔuffin laka walimā taqūlu.

   Ugh! I became fed up with you and what you say.

   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 17:23:

     وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا

     And your Lord has decreed that you may worship only Him and has decreed kindness to the parents. If either or both ever become aged, do not say to them "Ugh!" and do not berate them, but rather speak to them nobly.

   • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 21:67:

     أُفٍّ لَّكُمْ وَلِمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ ۖ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

     ʔuffin lakum walimā taʕbudūna min dūni llāhiʔafalā taʕqilūna

     Faugh on you and on whatever you worship in place of Allah! Have you lost your minds?
