[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ang- (“curve, bend”). Cognate with Sogdian [script needed] (ʾʾkʾyšʾk /ākēšāk/, “hook, pulling instrument”), Sanskrit अङ्कुश (aṅkuśa, “hook”).
Compare Armenian ակիշ (akiš), an Iranian borrowing.
