Etymology

From آق (ak, white) + كرمان (kerman, fortified town), a calque of Byzantine Greek Άσπρόκαστρον (Ásprókastron), from άσπρος (áspros, white) + κάστρον (kástron, castle, stronghold). Compare Romanian Cetatea Albă, Ukrainian Бі́лгород (Bílhorod) and German Weißenburg.
