Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *aral (island). Compare other Turkic cognates like Kazakh арал (aral), Kyrgyz арал (aral), Turkish aral, Uyghur ئارال (aral), Uzbek orol and Yakut арыы (arıı), all deriving from the same root.
