Etymology

From the root ת-ו-פ (t-w-p), possibly related to "drumming" or "burning". The word "Tophet" refers to a place where human sacrifices, often by fire, were historically performed, particularly in relation to the worship of Molech. Etymology is debated, but often linked to *toph* (תֹּף, "drum") or to the Akkadian word for burning or fire.
