1. (of people) to survive (live past a life-threatening event)

   הכלב היה היחיד ששרד ברעידת האדמה.

   hakélev hayá hayakhíd shesarád beridát ha'adamá.

   The dog was the only one who survived the earthquake.

2. (of things) to survive (remain intact after a disaster)

   ספר התורה שרד בשרפה בבית הכנסת בדרך נס.

   séfer hatórah sarád besrefá bebéyt haknéset bedérekh nés.

   The Torah scroll miraculously survived the fire at the synagogue.
