Most likely cognate with German Spieß, in which case inherited from Middle High German spiez (pike) and Middle High German spiz (spit), ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *speut (spear) and Proto-Germanic *spituz respectively. Usage as a feminine noun possibly influenced by etymologically unrelated Slavic terms.
