Etymology 3

Coined by Israeli poet Avraham Shlonsky, a prolific creator of Modern Hebrew neologisms.[1] Learned borrowing from Arabic سَمَك (samak, “fish”), ultimately from the root س م ك (s-m-k), meaning "to be held up, supported" and "to sustain", from which its meaning of "source of sustenance" was derived. Also cognate with Hebrew סָמַך (samák, “to support, sustain”),[2] which appears in the Bible with a similar sense of "sustenance" or "nourishment".[3]
