[edit]From Akkadian Salmānu-ašarēd (“Shulmanu is foremost”). Cognate with Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܫܠܡܢܥܣܪ (šalmāniˁsar) and Classical Syriac ܫܠܡܢܥܣܪ (šalmanaʿsar).
