From Akkadian Salmānu-ašarēd (Shulmanu is foremost). Cognate with Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܫܠܡܢܥܣܪ (šalmāniˁsar) and Classical Syriac ܫܠܡܢܥܣܪ (šalmanaʿsar).
