Etymology

[edit]

Probably borrowed from a form like *šuwahbu(m) meaning ‘the thing forced to be given’ = tribute from an Old South Arabian language spoken in Havilah. This would be an š-causative noun from the common Semitic root w-h-b ‘to give’ (see Sabaic 𐩥𐩠𐩨 whb "to give", Qatabanic 𐩥𐩠𐩨 whb "to give, grant").

Noun

  1. (mineralogy) onyx (a banded variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of quartz)
