Inherited from Middle High German rentsel.[1] Alternatively, ראַניעץ (ranyets) and ראַנעץ (ranets)[2] from Russian ра́нец (ránec) and Polish raniec, from German Ranzen, from Middle High German rans + ־ל (-l, diminutive suffix).
