Etymology 1

Likely a borrowing from a language spoken east of Canaan, related to Middle Persian [script needed] (kpyk' /⁠kabīg⁠/, monkey) and perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit कपि (kapi, ape, monkey). Monkeys have never been native to Canaan.
