[edit]Uncertain, but probably related to Proto-Slavic *žila (“sinew, tendon”), via Belarusian жы́ла (žýla), Polish żyła, Russian жи́ла (žíla), Ukrainian жи́ла (žýla), whence also the direct borrowing זשילע (zhile).
