[edit]Borrowed from German Zimmer (“a room”), Middle High German zimber, from Old High German zimbar, from Proto-Germanic *timrą, from Proto-Indo-European *dem- (“build, house”) (see Proto-Indo-European *dṓm). Cognate with English timber and Dutch timmer (“building; construction; room”).
