[edit]From Early New High German zwagen, from Middle High German twahen, dwahen (“to wash, to bathe”), from Old High German thwahan, dwahan, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *þwahaną. Compare German zwagen (“to wash”), obsolete since the 18th century. Related to German Zwehle.
