Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German pfersich, from Old High German phersih, early borrowing (before C.E. 700) from Medieval Latin persica (“peach (fruit)”). The Yiddish form is phonetically regular with the exception of the last syllable, which has been assimilated to the suffix ־קע (-ke). Similar forms exist in some dialects of East Central German; they are probably due to association of final -ich with the ending at hand in ־יק (-ik), which is pronounced /ɪk/ in Yiddish, but /ɪç/ in many adjacent dialects of German.
