[edit]From Middle High German vaterlich, veterlich, from Old High German faterlīh, from Proto-Germanic *fadurlīkaz. By surface analysis, פֿאָטער (foter) + ־לעך (-lekh). Compare German väterlich, Dutch vaderlijk, English fatherly.
