[edit]From Middle High German brēzel, from Old High German brezitella, from Vulgar Latin *brāchiātellus (“small cake”), from Latin bracchiātus (“have branches like arms”), from bracchium (“arm”) + -ātus. Cognate to German Brezel. See also פּוטער (puter) for the word-initial /b/ → /p/ shift.
