Derived from Classical Latin plūs (“more; further”), from Old Latin plous, from Proto-Italic *plēōs, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁yōs, derived from the root *pleh₁- (“to fill”).

Cognate with Italian più, Ladin plu, Sardinian prus.
