עקדיש

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Yiddish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German egedëhse, from Old High German egidehsa, from Proto-West Germanic *agiþahsijā (lizard). The shift in meaning is found in various High German dialects; the irregular change from Middle High German hs to Yiddish š, rather than the expected *ks, is particular to Yiddish, and may have been spread by biblical translations into the vernacular.
