עָווֹן / עָוֺן • (avón) m (plural indefinite עוונות / עָוֺנוֹת, singular construct עוון־ / עֲוֺן־)

1. iniquity
   • Tanach, Lamentations 4:6, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:

     וַיִּגְדַּל עֲוֺן בַּת־עַמִּי מֵחַטַּאת סְדֹם הַהֲפוּכָה כְמוֹ־רָגַע וְלֹא־חָלוּ בָהּ יָדָיִם׃

     Va-yigdál avón bat 'ammí me-ḥataat S'dom, ha-hafukháh kh'mo rága v-lo ḥálu vah yadáyim.

     For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands fell upon her.

2. (Jewish law) an intentional sin, done for the purpose of pleasure.
   • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Menachot 109:a:

     אמר רב ששת מנא אמינא לה דכתיב והיו לבית ישראל למכשול עון... ומכשול שוגג ועון מזיד

     Said Rav Sheshet, From where do I say that? As it is written, "And they became a stumbling block of iniquity unto the house of Israel."... And "stumbling block" refers to unintentionally, and "iniquity" refers to intentionality.
