From the root ע־ו־ה (ʿ-w-h), forming words relating to twisting, distorting, bending. Related to the root א־ו־ה ('-w-h), forming words relating to desire and lust. Related to the Arabic root غ و ي (ḡ w y). Cognate with Arabic أَغْوَى (ʔaḡwā, to lure, to tempt), Arabic غَوَى (ḡawā, to bend, to curve), and Aramaic עויא (ʿiwyā, ʿawyā, perversity, sin).
