Formed in Mishnaic times from סְפוֹג (s'fóg, sponge), from Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos) or σφόγγος (sphóngos).

סָפַג (safág) (pa'al construction, passive counterpart נִסְפַּג)

  1. to absorb ("to suck up or drink in").
  2. to absorb ("to include so that it no longer has separate existence").
  3. to receive something negative.
