[edit]From Middle High German nœtic, nœtec, nōtic, nōtec, nōdic, from Old High German nōtag (“forced, urgent, needy”), from Proto-West Germanic *naudag (“obligatory, needful”), from Proto-Germanic *naudagaz. By surface analysis, נויט (noyt, “need”) + ־יק (-ik) with umlaut. Compare German nötig.
