Etymology

[edit]

Compare German meistens. By surface analysis, מיינסטן (meynstn) +‎ ־ס (-s), which can possibly be further broken down into מײסט (meyst) +‎ ־ן (-n) +‎ ־ס (-s), where מײסט (meyst) would be cognate to German meist. Intrusive ־נ־ (-n-) may be due to influence from מינדסטנס (mindstns, at least).
