מיטל (mitl, middle) +‎ לאַנד (land, land) +‎ ־יש (-ish), likely as a calque of Latin mediterrāneus. Compare Czech středozemní, Macedonian средоземен (sredozemen), Russian средизе́мный (sredizémnyj), formed similarly.
