Hoffmeister suggests מ־ (ma-) +‎ Egyptian ḫt (fire).

Klein and Even-Shoshan derive מַ־ (instrumental prefix) +‎ חָתָה (to rake or snatch coals from a hearth with fire-tongs) +‎ ־ָה.
