Cognate with German Lachs, German Low German Lass, Dutch Low Saxon las, English lax (UK dialectal, Scotland), Danish laks, Faroese laksur, Icelandic lax, Norwegian Bokmål laks, Norwegian Nynorsk laks, Swedish lax and Russian лосось (lososʹ).
