Etymology
[edit]Probably from the יַקְטוּל of the verb נָשַׁף (nasháf), after bird's calls. Alternatively from the related נֶשֶׁף (néshef, “dusk”). Compare תִּנְשֶׁמֶת. Probably cognate with Akkadian enšūpu/enšūbu (“a bird”) and eššebu (“a kind of owl?”). Ultimately Derived from Proto-Semitic *nVšVp.
