[edit]Etymology
[edit]The first part from יאָשקע (yoshke), a Yiddish diminutive for יוסף (yosef, yoysef, “Joseph”), as though it were a nickname for ישו (yeshu, “Jesus”). The second part from Mishnaic Hebrew פַּנְדֵּירָא (pandērā), from Latin Panthera, the name of the Roman soldier alleged by some to have fathered Jesus.
