וַיְהִי (vayhí) (Biblical Hebrew pausal form וַיֶּהִי (vayéhi))

  1. Third-person masculine singular vav-consecutive imperfect (hence past tense) of הָיָה (hayá).
    • Tanach, Genesis 1:3, with translation of the King James Version:
      וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי אוֹר
      vayómer elohím y'hí ór vayhí ór
      And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
    • Tanach, Psalms 33:9, with translation of the English Standard Version:
      כִּי הוּא אָמַר וַיֶּהִי
      kí hú amár vayéhi
      For he spoke, and it came to be
