Ultimately from French (théâtre des) variétés. Compare German Varieté, Belarusian вар'етэ́ (varʺjeté), Russian варьете́ (varʹjeté), and Ukrainian вар'єте́ (varʺjeté). Source of masculine gender uncertain.
