הִתְעַמֵּר (hit'amér) (hitpa'el construction)

  1. (Biblical Hebrew) to treat as a slave
    • Tanach, Deuteronomy 21:14, with translation of the New International Version:
If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.
    • Tanach, Deuteronomy 24:7, with translation of the English Standard Version:
If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he treats him as a slave or sells him, then that thief shall die. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
  2. (modern, law) to abuse, to mistreat
