From Ancient Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopótamos), from ἵππος (híppos, horse, from Proto-Hellenic *íkkʷos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos) + ποταμός (potamós, river, of uncertain origin).
