הֶחֱיָה • (heḥeyá) (hif'il construction)

1. To revive, to resuscitate, to revitalize, to quicken
   • Tanach, Psalms 143:11, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:

     לְמַעַן־שִׁמְךָ יְהוָה תְּחַיֵּנִי בְּצִדְקָתְךָ תוֹצִיא מִצָּרָה נַפְשִׁי׃

     L'má'an shim'kha, YHWH, t'ḥayéni, b'tzidqat'khá totzí mitzará nafshí

     For Thy name's sake, O LORD, quicken me; In Thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

   • Tanach, Deuteronomy 32:39, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:

     רְאוּ עַתָּה כִּי אֲנִי אֲנִי הוּא וְאֵין אֱלֹהִים עִמָּדִי אֲנִי אָמִית וַאֲחַיֶּה מָחַצְתִּי וַאֲנִי אֶרְפָּא וְאֵין מִיָּדִי מַצִּיל׃

     Re'ú 'atah ki ani hu v-ein elohim 'imadi; ani amit va-aḥayeh; maḥatzti va-ani erpa; v-ein miyadi matzil

     See now that I, even I, am He, And there is no god with Me; I kill, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I heal; And there is none that can deliver out of My hand.

   • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Avot 4:22:

     הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר: הַיִּלּוֹדִים לָמוּת, וְהַמֵּתִים לְהֵחָיוֹת, וְהַחַיִּים לִדּוֹן׃

     Hu hayáh omer: Ha-yiludim lamut, v-ha-metim l'heḥayot, v-ha-ḥayyim lidon.

     He would say: The born will die, and the dead will be resurrected, and the living will be judged.

   • a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 90b:

     שָׁאֲלוּ מִינִין אֶת רַבָּן גַּמְלִיאֵל: מִנַּיִין שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְחַיֶּה מֵתִים? אָמַר לָהֶם, מִן הַתּוֹרָה וּמִן הַנְּבִיאִים וּמִן הַכְּתוּבִים, וְלֹא קִיבְּלוּ מִמֶּנוּ.

     Sha'alú minín et Rabán Gamliél: Mináyin she-ha-Qadósh Barúkh Hu m'ḥaye metím? Amár lahém: Min ha-Toráh u-min ha-N'vi'ím u-min ha-K'tuvím, v-lo qiblú miménnu.

     Heretics asked Rabban Gamliel: From where [is it derived] that the Holy Blessed One resurrects the dead? He said to them: From the Torah, the Prophets, and the Hagiographa, but they did not receive it from him.
