Etymology
[edit]Cognate with Arabic دكان (dukkān, “dais, platform; shop, store”)—and ultimately Hindi/Urdu दुकान (dukān, “store, shop”), by way of Classical Persian دکان (dokân, “shop, store”)—as well as Aramaic דּוּךְ (dukh, “a flat place”). From the root ד־ו־ך (d-w-k), meaning "pounded flat".[1]
