[edit]Possibly a partial calque of German Buchweizen, as בוך (bukh) or בוכע (bukhe) in the sense of "beech" (cf. German Buche) is not attested in Yiddish. By surface analysis, בוק (buk, “beech”) + ווייץ (veyts).
