Etymology

From Middle High German bestān, bestēn, from Old High German bistān, from Proto-Germanic *bistandaną, *bistāną. Cognate with German bestehen, Dutch bestaan. Equivalent to באַ־ (ba-) +‎ שטיין (shteyn).
