[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Semitic *ʾil-. Cognate with the Arabic إله, Hebrew אֵל (ʾēl), אֱלוֹהַּ / אֱלֹהַּ (ʾĕlṓah), אֱלוֹהִים / אֱלֹהִים (ʾĕlōhīm).
