Etymology

From אֵל (el, god, deity) +‎ דָּעָה (da'a, to call). Note that דעה is an unused construction coming from the root י־ד־ע (y-d-') relating to "knowing". A similar construction is found in the Arabic دَعَا (da'a, to call). The name thus can be translated as "the one whom God calls".
