In the positive singular the phrase is simple, with the occasional inversion to דאָ איז (do iz), but the plural and negative forms see a great deal of dialectal variation. "There isn't..." may be rendered:

• איז נישט דאָ (iz nisht do)
  • איז נישטאָ (iz nishto)
• איז ניט דאָ (iz nit do)
  • איז ניטאָ (iz nito)

In the plural, i.e. "there are", איז (iz, “is”) becomes pluralized to זענען (zenen, “are”) with the alternative form זײַנען (zaynen). Thus we encounter in the positive:

• זײַנען דאָ (zaynen do) / זענען דאָ (zenen do)
• דאָ זײַנען (do zaynen) / דאָ זענען (do zenen)

and in the negative ("there aren't"):

• זײַנען נישט דאָ (zaynen nisht do) / זענען נישט דאָ (zenen nisht do)
  • זײַנען נישטאָ (zaynen nishto) / זענען נישטאָ (zenen nishto)
