1. hostility, enmity, hatred.
   • Tanach, Numbers 35:22, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:

     וְאִם־בְּפֶתַע בְּלֹא־אֵיבָה הֲדָפוֹ אוֹ־הִשְׁלִיךְ עָלָיו כָּל־כְּלִי בְּלֹא צְדִיָּה׃

     V-im b-féta' b-lo eyvá hadafó o hishlíkh 'aláv kol kli b-lo tz'diyah

     But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him any thing without lying in wait

   • a. 217 C.E., Mishnah, Avot 4:7:

     הַחוֹשֵׂךְ עַצְמוֹ מִן הַדִּין, פּוֹרֵק מִמֶּנּוּ אֵיבָה וְגָזֵל וּשְׁבוּעַת שָׁוְא

     ha-ḥosékh 'atzmó min ha-din, porék mimménu eyvá v-gazél u-shvu'at shav.

     One who withholds himself from judgement removes from himself enmity, theft, and false oaths.
