From אויפֿוואַרטן (oyfvartn, to wait; to help; to serve) +‎ ־ער (-er), with the former deriving from אויפֿ־ (oyf-) +‎ וואַרטן (vartn). Compare German aufwarten, Aufwӓrter (servant).
