Etymology

Probably a deverbal from אויסלייגן (oysleygn), from Middle High German ūʒlegen (to display, set out; interpret; pronounce; lend money).[1][2]By surface analysis, אויס־ (oys-) +‎ לייגן (leygn). Possibly under influence of אות (os, letter), אותיות pl (oysyes), from Hebrew אות (ot). Contrast German Auslage f (cost or sum (of money); display (of wares)), Auslegung f (interpretation).[3]
