վէգ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Iranian *vēg. Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬉𐬖𐬀 (vaēγa, stroke, blow), Persian ویغ (vêğ, scream, shouting, noise), Sanskrit वेग (vega, violent agitation, shock, jerk). The sense "knucklebone (also used like dice in a game)" perhaps developed from an earlier meaning of "projectile"; compare also Georgian კამათელი (ḳamateli, die, dice) beside კამათი (ḳamati, argument, dispute).
