Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]As is already suggested by Nor baṙgirkʿ haykazean lezui, composed of վիզ (viz, “neck”) + -ան (-an). Accepted by J̌ahukyan. For the semantics compare the Old Armenian expression վիզ ամբառնալ (viz ambaṙnal, “to become rebellious, proud, insubordinate”), ընդվզիմ (əndvzim), English stiff-necked, Russian жестоковыйный (žestokovyjnyj). Ačaṙyan unnecessarily rejects this etymology and leaves the origin of the word open.
Adjective
